Power Factor Improvement Plant (PFI)

Low Power Factor (p.f) is a problem that can be solved by adding power factor improvement (PFI) capacitors to the plant distribution system. The capacitor kVAR rating shows how much reactive power the capacitor will supply. Each unit of kVAR supplied will decrease the inductive reactive power demand by the same amount.

The centrally controlled automatic PFI plant is of compact design and suitable for operation in 6/9/12 steps in the system for automatic control of the reactive power.

The power factor of a load is defined as the ratio of active power to apparent power, i.e. KW: KVA and is referred to as cosφ. The closer cosφ is to unity, the less reactive power is drawn from the supply.

Why PFI is Necessary:

• A decrease in the general expense or cost of power/electricity can be accomplished by improving the power factor to a progressively monetary economic level.
